Argyle Pink Diamonds

Loose Argyle Pink Diamonds

Why Argyle Pink Diamonds Are So Rare & Coveted

Argyle Pink Diamonds were mined exclusively from the Argyle Mine in the East Kimberley, Western Australia. Discovered in the late 1970s, Argyle produced the vast majority of the world's pink diamonds until its closure in 2020. That finite supply — combined with exceptional colour variety, gives Argyle stones enduring desirability among collectors and bespoke jewellery buyers.

As a Select Atelier, our long-standing relationship with Argyle allowed us privileged access to hand-selected stones and authenticated lots, many of which are now represented in Collector’s Edition™ capsules and tender highlights.

History of Argyle Pink Diamonds

The Argyle Mine, located in Western Australia, has been the source of the world’s most treasured pink diamonds since its discovery in 1983. Over its mining history, Argyle has produced a remarkably rare spectrum of pink hues, from delicate blushes to deep vivid tones, making these diamonds among the most sought-after globally.

Argyle Pink Diamonds have adorned royalty, celebrities, and bespoke jewellery collections, cementing their status as a symbol of luxury and rarity.

Understanding Colour & The Argyle Grading Scale

The single most important factor in a pink diamond’s value is colour, both hue and intensity. Argyle developed a specific grading nomenclature to reflect the subtlety of its stones. Common Argyle categories include:

  • PP (Purplish Pink) — purple undertones
  • P (Pink) — classic pink hues
  • PR (Pink Rose) — softer rose tones
  • PC (Pink Champagne) — warmer, brownish-pink tones
  • BL (Blue Violet) — exceptionally rare blue-violet variants

Each category is further scored by intensity (1 = most intense → 9 = lightest). For many buyers, intensity and saturation matter more than absolute clarity; a strong colour will often command premium value even if inclusions are present.

Guide to Buying — What to Look For

Colour & Hue

Choose the intensity that speaks to you from delicate blush to vivid purplish-pink. Purplish undertones are highly prized and can increase desirability and price.

Clarity & Cut

Inclusions are common in coloured diamonds; they don’t always reduce value if colour is exceptional. A precise cut enhances colour saturation and brilliance.

Carat & Rarity

Most Argyle pink diamonds are under 1 carat — larger examples are exponentially rarer and more valuable.

Provenance & Documentation

Always request Argyle identification documents, a unique lot number or laser inscription and any GIA (or equivalent) reports. Provenance preserves value and verifies authenticity.

Caring for Pink Diamond Jewellery

Pink diamonds are among the hardest natural substances, but careful handling ensures lasting beauty:

  • Clean with mild soapy water and a soft brush.
  • Store separately to prevent scratches from other gemstones.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.

Frequently Asked Questions

How rare are Argyle pink diamonds?

Only 0.1% of diamonds mined globally are pink. Argyle diamonds are especially rare, with near flawless stones being extremely uncommon.

What gives them their pink colour?

The colour arises from the distortion in the diamond's crystal lattice, causing light to refract and create a 'blush' effect.

How are prices determined?

Prices depend on colour intensity and the presence of a secondary colour, carat weight, clarity, cut, and provenance. Rarer hues and larger stones command premium values.
